Advantages of Layer 2 conversion Layer 2 media converter modules use store-and-forward MAC-layer bridging to increase network efficiency while providing media conversion. Unlike Layer 1 media converters, which use repeater-like technology and pass on all network packets, Layer 2 media converters actively store, filter, and forward packets like a bridge or a switch. Layer 2 media converters are more efficient than Layer 1 media converters in much the same way that switches are more efficient than hubs. This increased efficiency can significantly reduce network overhead, which is especially noticeable in very large networks. Manageability The High-Density Media Converter System II with Embedded Management enables you to monitor and manage the media converters in your large network from one location. It's perfect for twisted-pair networks with fiber segments. Fix network failures from your desk with the included iView(tm) software. In addition, this system works with the interface modules from the original High-Density Media Converter System for complete network management! Chassis Choose from three chassis types. The 18-slot rackmountable chassis provides a central hub for your media converters, and it comes with either an AC or a DC power supply. The convenient 2-slot desktop model is perfect for peripheral applications and bringing fiber to the desktop. When you want to add new file servers, the mid-size 8-slot desktop chassis is your solution. For storage convenience, a rackmount kit is available for the LMC5102A. All chassis include a pair of redundant cooling fans to dissipate heat. If one fan fails, the other fan keeps things running smoothly. For added redundancy, you can equip the 18-slot chassis with a second AC or DC power supply. It provides the backup you need for those mission-critical applications. Interface modules Each of the following hot-swappable media conversion modules includes LinkLoss(tm) and/or FiberAlert(tm) features to notify network managers of "silent failures" and help them diagnose problems on fiber networks. The modules also have LEDs. All twisted-pair modules feature autocrossover ports to eliminate the worry over whether to use straight- or cross-pinned cabling. Many modules are available in one- or two-strand models. Because the one-strand models use only a single strand of fiber optic cable, you can make two connections over your duplex fiber cable
