- Operates in either continuous wave or blink mode. If you thought your mother-in-law cornered the market on quick fault-finding, then brace yourself for the BLACK BOX(R) Fault Finder. This compact, easy-to-use tester locates breaks and faults in optical fibers and ceramic ferrules in no time flat. The Fault Finder is the perfect tool for checking both single-mode and multimode fiber cable. Just insert the ferrule of the fiber optic connector into the "quick connect" port of the Fault Finder and rotate the Fault Finder switch to either continuous-wave (CW) or blink (MOD) mode. Continuous-wave output mode provides steady fault illumination. For well-lit areas, the blink output mode increases viewing contrast. An LED on the Fault Finder indicates which mode is selected. The Fault Finder then sends a red laser beam through the fiber. Any interruption of continuity is indicated by red light escaping from the fiber at the break. The light will also escape through the jacket if the cable is bent excessively. The high power output of the Fault Finder enables fault detection up to 3 kilometers (1.8 mi.) away. Concerned about the condition of your ceramic ferrules? You can use the Fault Finder to identify faults in the ferrules as well. A fiber break inside or past the ferrule results in a glowing ferrule. A glowing ferrule can also indicate a bad endface polish. In such a case, light in the fiber is reflected internally and therefore is visible through the ferrule, causing it to glow red. The interface of the Fault Finder fits all 2.5-mm ferrules, so it's adaptable to most connector types. Black Box also offers adapters for ST(R), SC, and FC connectors. The pocket size of the Fault Finder makes it a handy, convenient tool. But don't be fooled by its tiny size; the Fault Finder is as sturdy and reliable as it is compact. The tester is constructed of durable waterproof aluminum and includes a dust cap and nylon carrying case. Plus it can operate for more than 48 hours using the two included AA batteries.
