These switches are designed to operate in applications where the temperature cannot be controlled, from the withering heat of the desert sun to the numbing cold of arctic conditions. Their cases are made of steel. The rugged, 18-gauge steel cases of these switches are engineered to function as heat sinks, which draw the heat away from the internal electronics and dissipate it. In order to minimize the heat dissipation problem further, each switch uses only 10 watts of power. Built tough, Hardened Ethernet Switches are virtually impenetrable. Problems such as convection air, insects, dirt, and dust can't enter them. And if the switches happen to be adjacent to a building fire or a plenum fire, their cases will not allow smoke inside to damage the electronics. For complete invulnerability to the elements, the switches can be installed in watertight NEMA 4 metal enclosures for all-weather outdoor operation. Applications for Hardened Ethernet Switches include roadside traffic data collection and control stations, industrial plant locations, plenums and ceilings in commercial buildings, and military tents and field sites. Each switch features six autonegotiating RJ-45 ports for 10-/100-Mbps applications. These ports operate in either half- or full-duplex mode. In addition to their RJ-45 ports, Hardened Ethernet Switches are equipped with two ports for full-duplex, 100-Mbps fiber optic connectivity. Models LB9901A and LB9904A have two multimode SC ports. Models LB9902A and LB9905A come with one multimode SC port plus one single-mode SC port. Models LB9903A and LB9906A are equipped with two single-mode SC ports.
