Exasperated with the time you spend not putting out fires, but just getting to them? It's nice to be needed, but you can't be in several places at once. And although the Secure Rack Modem can't clone you, it can do the next best thing, which is provide secure remote access to your equipment. In order to provide this secure access, the Secure Rack Modem features a user directory. The directory stores as many as 100 user names and passwords, along with an optional dialback number. To access your serial communications equipment from a remote location, you simply call the modem, which then prompts you for a password. Once the correct password is entered, the path to the connected equipment is opened. The Secure Rack Modem also supports dialback access for increased security. If the directory password field contains a dialback number, the Secure Rack Modem hangs up after receiving the password, dials the dialback number, and opens the connection path to the equipment after the dialback number answers. Once you have established a connection to your equipment through either the password or dialback features of the modem, you can remotely configure your system and view parameters. Simply enter the system password and the serial DB9 console port will enable you to enter/edit passwords and set system parameters, including modem settings. Plus, you can also access the console port to communicate to a secondary serial device, such as a reboot switch. These configuration options make remote installation easy. Just plug in the power and phone line, call the Secure Rack Modem, and download all parameters by keystroke or ASCII file. No external AT commands are required to configure the modem, which is ideal when the modem is attached to equipment that cannot send an AT setup string. But just because the Secure Rack Modem is easy for you to access doesn't mean it's easy for everyone to access. In addition to the security features of password and dialback access, the Secure Rack Modem also includes an audit trail log. This log tracks the last 100 valid and invalid password connections, the time and date of each connection, and the duration of the call. So you'll know whenever anyone attempts to access your modem. And although the Secure Rack modem supports remote configuration and management, you're not limited to remote access. You can also configure the modem locally.
