Understanding Military Spec

Resistors

The military specifications for resistors are numerous and refer to the type of material which the Resistor is made of. The military part numbers all start with the letter "R", followed by another letter denoting the material. In some cases a third letter, usually an "R" may be used. This third letter "R" refers to a high-reliability type (called "Hi-rel").
Some of the more common Resistor Military Specifications and their associated part number prefixes are as follows:
MIL-SPEC PREFIX TYPE
MIL-R 11 RC Composition Fixed
MIL-R 19 RA Wire Wound Variable
MIL-R 22 R-P Power Variable
MIL-R 26 RW Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-R 93 RB Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-R 94 RV Composition Variable
MIL-RlO5O9 RN Film Fixed
MIL-RI8546 RN Film Fixed
MIL-RI8546 RE Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-RI9365 RX Wire Wound Adjustable
MIL-R22097 RJ Carbon Trimmers
MIL-R22684 RL Film Fixed
MIL-R27208 RT Trimming Potentiometer
MIL-R39005 RBR Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-R39007 RWR Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-R39008 RCR Composition Fixed
MIL-R39009 RER Wire Wound Fixed
MIL-R39015 RTR Trimming Potentiometer
MIL-R39017 RLR Film Fixed
MIL-R39035 RJR Carbon Trimmers
MIL-R55182 RNR Film Fixed

To determine the "approved" vendors, refer to the QPL (Qualified Product List) numerically identical to the, MIL-Spec.(i.e.,MIL-R-ll QPL 11).
An example of a military resistor part number, under Mil-Spec Mil-R-55182 for metal film resistors, would look like this:
